Isaac’s first day of school, part 2

When I picked Isaac up from school he didn’t say much at first, but as we walked home  he 8.27.09 Isaac's first day of school AM (11)started telling me bits and pieces of his day and by the time we got home, he was very eager to tell me more and more of the details.  He was especially eager to read some books for his reading log.  He ran into his room and came back with two books on machines.  Both books were not beginner reading books, but he was determined to read from them.  I helped him with the words he didn’t know and we read a few lines in each book together.  He was very excited about his reading and wanted me to write down each word that he had read and then talked about how amazed his teacher would be with his reading.

His teacher’s name is Mrs. Marler.  He told me that she went to school when she was a 8.27.09 Isaac's first day of school AM (18)kid and that she’s married to someone with the same name (Mrs. Marler) at first he insisted that her husband’s name is MRS. Marler, but eventually he realized that he must be MR Marler.  He also remembered that she came from a big family.  He said that she read a book about school and a book about herself.  He told me about going outside to play and about the recycled tires they used in place of wood chips on the playground.  He told me all the playground rules that he could remember which turned out to be 3 of the 5 rules.  He talked about earning a treat when they came in and said the teacher tried to give them a rotten banana.  Through a few questions, I learned that the rotten banana is what they earn instead of a treat if they are naughty.  He demonstrated what they do with their hands when they walk 8.27.09 Isaac's first day of school AM (20) down the hall and told me that they are not allowed to talk in the hall.  When we talked about how some of the kids come at different parts of the day, I explained that not all the kids know their numbers and letters like he does.  He got very excited about the idea of teaching the other kids their letters and numbers.  The last detail of his day came just before bed when he told me that there was someone in his class who was not a kid besides his teacher.  He said she was “bigger than a great-grandma” and “really old” and that she helps the kids that need help.

I was impressed with how much he remembered from his 2 hours and 45 minutes of school.  With all the excitement from the first day of school with a new classroom and new kids all around, he still remembered lots of little details.  I get the impression that he really liked his first day at school and that he’s excited to go back.  Click here to hear him tell you about his first day.
