All the Planets and the Solar System
This is a book that Isaac wanted to write. After seeing the story that Charlotte wrote (posted previously), Isaac really wanted to make a book. He became really impatient. I told him I couldn’t help him until after Nicole was taking a nap and Ila was settled. He had a hard time waiting, but eventually calmed down by preparing for his story with a stack of books and a cartoon.
He insisted that he wanted to write a non-fiction book and it’s partly that. I’m fairly sure he made up some of the facts, but he didn’t know enough about some of the planets so we had to read parts of some books he had checked out from the library. He picked out the facts to include and on several of them the facts came directly from his brain—I bet you could guess which facts are his.He insisted that I give myself credit for writing the words, but thought I should write Kathleen as my name. Later he said that it has all those things for him since he did most of the work.
This post is a long one so click on the link to read on if you want. The first few pages are probably my favorite because they come mostly from ideas within his brain. I opted for making a thorough accounting . Now, you can check them out here to know how I have carried out accounting for the sake of family history/journaling.
Text Page 1: All the planets gather up in a certain line around the sun. The line is called it’s orbit. The Solar System is full of planets all day and night. It never runs out of planets and no planets will never get extinct.â€Text Page 2: Mercury is so close to the sun that the sun’s fire can bounce off of it and go to Mercury. This means Mercury is very, very hot!
Mercury is the little grey dot on the ray of the sun. Isaac said “it’s in one of the sun’s flames†as he drew it. Then he said “that’s a crazy sun for bouncing onto Mercury all the flames.â€
Text Page 3: Venus almost has Volcanoes all over it’s floor because sun strikes are sneaking in.
After finding out that Venus is even hotter than Mercury he drew multiple sun rays hitting Venus and remarked how they were all bunching up on Venus.
Text Page 4: Earth has the most weather, and people, and plants.
Earth is the blue dot.
Text Page 5: Mars has the most wars and the most asteroid bumps. They have the most bumps because they don’t have the right protection. It’s got hundreds more asteroid bumps than Earth.
The grey dots are asteroids and the green dots are craters (asteroid bumps)
Text Page 6: Saturn has the most poison air and the most longest rings. There’s a bump as big as Venus surrounded by poison air.
He draws Saturn as a yellow planet with a grey ring.
Text Page 7: Jupiter has the longest storm and it is mostly red. It’s the biggest planet in the Solar System. It is the noisiest planet!!
Isaac wrote “V V V VV V !!†as the noise Jupiter makes. He said “that’s how much it yells. As he colored he said “that’s the storm that’s been running for a long time.†After finishing the rest of the book we found that we had a blank page 8 so we thought we’d fill it with facts about Jupiter. We got out the book and he told me which facts he wanted to include until the page was full. I think he was done drawing because he wanted the whole page to be text. Also, I recall holding a squirming fussy baby as I wrote so it’s a little sloppy.
Text Page 8: Scientists send spacecrafts close to Jupiter. Because it’s made of gas, if you tried to stand on it, you would sink deeper and deeper. It is about five times farther from the sun than Earth is. It is so big that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it. Jupiter takes almost 12 Earth years to orbit the Sun. Text Page 9: Uranus is the third biggest planet. 63 Earths would fit in it. Only Jupiter and Saturn are bigger. One half of Uranus is dark for 42 years then it is light for 42 years.
This is one of the ones he hasn’t studied much and we had to read some of a book before he came up with the facts for this one.
Text Page 10: Voyager 2 took pictures of Neptune. Even the core of Neptune is made out of gas.
Text Page 11: The Solar System holds lots of planets that they should never get rid of.”
Text Page 12: The biggest planets in the Solar System are gas giants. Jupiter is the biggest, biggest.
He said he wanted to draw Saturn and Jupiter next to each other so you could see that Jupiter is bigger and as he drew he said “I have to draw them skinnyâ€
Page 13 Text: Pupils take the best pictures, but another way to get pictures of the Solar System is to take a camera on a spaceship.
I think he meant Space Probes instead of Pupils, but I couldn’t remember the word when we were making the book. As he drew the top picture he said “I know this is the one that got sent out to space and it’s still going.†Then he considered his picture and decided it wasn’t right so he made a blue X over the picture and drew the second one which he was satisfied with.
The End
As he drew the pictures, he looked at pictures of the planets on his books. On several of them he’d say something about them having some white on them which he took as justification for not fully coloring in each planet. He’s got a very creative mind but he is both not very interested in drawing and not very good at it, so his artwork leaves much to be desired.
You should find the Voyager recordings called “Symphonies of the Planets” for him. They recorded the actual sounds the planets made as the craft passed them.
