The year we had Christmas in May (or was it April?) –part 2 = Before The Accident
The Lithuanians
I don’t remember much of their visit. I remember several different moments as if they’re photographs in my head. I’m glad my mom included their visit in her record, because I couldn’t place their visit properly into the events of that year.
I remember going with them to the hospital to visit my grandmother. That memory is so vague that it’s almost gone. But I think of being in a brightly lit room and the Lithuanians and my grandmother greeting each other with happiness and joy and lots of talking. (That memory is a stark contrast to the other memory I have of visiting my grandmother in the hospital just before her death less than a year later.) I also remember staring at rug where she fell and broke her arm and having the image of that rug with a bump in it fixed in my head.
I remember being crowded in a van with our Lithuanian relatives and looking to see if the women had hairy legs.
I remember that they called Sarah princess- and that she loved it. They either gave her a crown or someone made her a crown. I remember her running around Grandma’s dining room table smiling as they referred to her as a princess.
I remember that they had lots of little gifts in their suitcases that that were made of some kind of leather and smelled like fish.
I remember Dad kept using the same Lithuanian word over and over again as he pointed to things and when I asked him what it meant he said it meant that or look here.
I remember being downstairs in our house gathered around our round table (the one dad later used to sort seed corn) for AJs pizza and salad. Our Lithuanian relatives poured French dressing on their pizza because they thought that it was the pizza sauce, but they wouldn’t let us clean it off or give them a new piece.
And I have this picture in my head of Raimundus and Dalia standing upstairs in our dinning room talking about the accident. Dad’s Food poisoning*
It’s sad, I should remember my Dad being in the hospital for an extended period of time and close to death, but I don’t. Maybe all the other things that happened that year just overwhelmed my memories of that time.
The only thing I remember about Dad’s food poisoning is that he was very, very sick and I have a picture in my head of him in his bed on the bathroom floor. I also remember knowing that he was sick with food poisoning*.
*My memory is flawed. I talked to my mom and she said it was blood poisoning and I suppose my head changed food to blood when I read what she wrote.
