Where I am

Well, the year’s winding down, and I’ve got a few thoughts about where I am now.  I thought I’d write them down to compare down the road and see how I change.

Favorite sports teams remain the Colts (NFL), Jazz (NBA), Cougars and Vols (NCAA Football).  I also like watching the NY Giants and keep my eyes on the Steelers.

Musical taste is mostly the same, except I started to really like some varieties of country music.  That’s a change few people might have seen in the younger me, but I realized I was just being ignorant.  New artists added to my favorites are Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Carl Jackson, and so forth.  Doubters ought to give Steve Earle’s Guitar Town a try.  I’m still digging in here, and might find more that really astonishes me.  If I had the money, I’d buy a pedal steel guitar and learn to play.

The year before I came to appreciate Synth Pop/Dance Pop (OMD’s Sugar Tax should probably be required listening before you dismiss this genre).  Again, the younger me had some contempt for this genre, but I’ve become a little more open as I get a little older.  I think that the social pressure is off now, so I can listen to whatever I want.

So, for the past year, my most listened to artists were U2, Belle & Sebastian, Counting Crows, David Bowie, Billy Joel, Steve Earle, Dire Straits, Paul Simon, OMD, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Van Halen, and Bon Jovi (in that order, according to Last.fm).  My favorite track was Strangers When We Meet, by David Bowie.

I read a few new books, but not as many as in previous years.  Other media took over, I’m afraid.  I read bout the Six Day War and I read Paul Johnson’s Intellectuals.  I read Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian and Richard Price’s Clockers.

Candy Confessions

I just can’t bring myself to allow my kids control over a large supply of candy so this is  what I do:

On Halloween I usually confiscate all of the children’s candy within an hour of our arrival home.  I allow them a small amount of time to gorge, but I start to fret about 3.23.08 Isaac (3)them eating too much candy and remove it as soon as I can manage.  I put the candy in a container and they earn pieces for doing chores at a rate of one candy for every 4 chores.

On Easter I do the same thing, I remove it as soon as I possibly can.  One time I was so reluctant to give them candy throughout the year, that when the next Easter rolled around I still had candy from the previous Easter.  I actually reused the candy and then reconfiscated it.

I have even taken away candy that they came home from a birthday party with and then made them earn the candy back at the rate and in the manner listed above (4 chores =1 candy).

For the last few months, I’ve even made them earn their fruitsnacks?!  Have I become overcontrolling?  Or do other moms do this too?

My Voting Playlist

So I went to vote this morning, and I kid you not, the songs that came up random while I voted were as follows:

I think there’s a deeper meaning in this.  The Candidate of Change isn’t change at all, but more Carter-esque nonsense.  It’s "the same old song", if you will.  I’m pretty sick of Chris Cannon, so "Beat It".  "Moby Dick" has some sort of fruitless quest or something going on.  "Careless Love" applies to the dimmer conservatives who are under Obama’s spell, and "Fascination Street" to the Democrats.  I think.

So, my votes.  Mostly Republicans, one write-in, one Democrat, one Constitution party, "No" on retaining all judges (force of habit; one unfair ticket, and you can all get re-appointed).

The write-in may require some explanation.  We had the choice for our governor of John Huntsman, who is a grade-A RINO, Superdell (I’m a former employee, and can verify that he’s insane), and a Democrat promising free health care for everyone.  My choice?

I wrote in "Thomas S. Monson".

Please use the Sink?

sink It’s a little hard to read, but Zach found this sign on the Urinal at the local Iceberg.  Ironically, instead of referring patrons to the nearby toilet, this sign suggests they use the sink.

The Singeing

Well, it’s come time to blog about the event that family insiders 10.20.08 Zach's singed hair (3)-1have referred to as "the singing."  You’ll have to ask Zach for more details if my description is lacking, but here’s how it happed from my perspective.  Zach was starting up the gas grill on Monday night as I was playing with the kids in the backyard and he came around the corner saying something about losing an eyebrow.  He was laughing when I looked up to behold a spectacle of singeing expertise.  He must have leaned over to see why the grill wasn’t lighting only to be surprised with an explosion of fire which singed his eyebrows, eyelashes and hair.  Check out more pictures here.  I can only hope that this event is recorded in the family history as the time I ran out of gas on I-15 and had to call for help was recorded and perhaps it will overshadow the day my hair caught on fire as I was blowing out my birthday candles.

Christmas Lists

Hello all.  I’ve provided a page where family can put  their Christmas desires for easy memory and funtimes.  You can reach it here.  Please send me a note with what you’d like to add, and I’ll post it up.

My next new car

P1030569-1

"You like this kind of car so you would buy it?"

"There’s a special checkout for the car, you can drive it up and buy it."

Isaac built this car the other day and then he was so pleased with it that he talked about it continuously as he followed me around the house.  The above quotations are the only ones out of his stream of speech about the car that I could remember.

Site Problems

For some reason I couldn’t view or post on Virtute for a few days so I should have multiple posts today :)  I’ll see how many I can post before the baby on my lap starts wiggling too much.

Fingerpaint

9.24.08 finger paint I attend a preschool group with some other stay-at-home moms in the ward and it was my turn to bring the craft.  So I looked online and found this cheap, easy recipe for finger paint.  I made it the night before and by the time I brought it it was clumpy and the food coloring was difficult to wash off little hands.  I wonder if I cooked it wrong (I got impatient and turned up the heat).  It really 9.24.08 finger paint (2)sounded like a good idea, but I was disappointed in the outcome.

A Yard?!

If you’ve been to our house in the last almost three years, you should know that we keep talking about having a yard with grass, but till now it’s been all talk.  The story of how it got here is long and dull, but here’s a little slideshow of progress.  The second part of the yard should have sod installed tomorrow and the back will take us longer yet–but look—PROGRESS!

Beyond the Pale

The recent Obama ad mocking John McCain has gotten me a little riled.  Yes, John McCain doesn’t use a computer much.  I recommend looking at this article from Slate for a little insight into the real McCain background on telecommunications and the internet.

For the mockers, here’s the key line: ". . .because of his war injuries, he is limited in his ability to wield a keyboard."  John McCain had his arms and fingers broken multiple times as a result of his commitment to this nation.  Let’s use a little caution when making fun of his ability to tap out an email.

Neverending Laundry

I actually used to enjoy doing the laundry.  It was my excuse to sit down and watch a  show while I folded clothes.  That was before I had three children now it seems to have become the 9.1.08 Charlotte (3)bain of my existence.  Between the baby’s spit-up and drool and the messy eating and accidents from my other two, I end up doing laundry nearly everyday.  If that weren’t enough, I never get through folding a batch without at least three interruptions, some of which last for a half an hour or more.  If I save it till the kids are in bed and I’ve done my other nightly chores, I find myself too tired to finish it.  I feel like I’m always in some stage of doing laundry–this is one of those things that gets better with time right?  How old do the kids have to be before I insist they wash, dry and fold their own clothes?  I’m considering starting them all on their own laundry at age 5, while I’m at it, I could start charging rent at age 10!

My Birthday Surprise

"I would be remiss if I didn’t stand up and publicly thank my husband. . . ." ok, it’s not fast Sunday ;) , but I did want to blog about my amazing new sink!  First of all, I didn’t really believe Zach when he to7.16.08 Birthday Surprise (1)ld me that he had a birthday surprise planned until he told me that planning to go to lunch with my sister might spoil his plans.  Then I really started to wonder, but I feared that I would  get my hopes up so I told myself that his surprise was that he was going to bring home one scoop of vanilla ice cream in a Styrofoam bowl with no toppings (it was one of the least exciting surprises I could think of).  The night before my birthday he told me that the surprise was that another couple would pick us up and we’d all go to the Temple together.  I thought it was a nice surprise for him to have gone to the trouble of making all the arrangements, but I was further surprised when I walked in the door and saw this beautiful new sink and faucet installed.

Isaac said the next day as he was eating his toast "the sink matches my toast!" then later he ran in and exclaimed with great excitement "all the sinks in the house are white!"

Quick Months

Seems like the months have just raced by.  Starting with Nicole being born on May 6th, we’ve just had one adventure after another.  We’ve had Kathleen’s family in town, which is blessing with some challenges.  I’m an introverted person sometimes, and I’m not a great host.  Luckily Kathleen makes up for that.  I was glad the toads had a chance to get to know Grandma Bunny, Grandpa Bird, and Uncle Brian better.  I was also glad for the chance to take a nice long drive with Grandpa Bird; we’re very different, but I felt like that trip was a great chance for us to get to know each other better and improve our bond.

Work is a little nuts.  I’m trying to keep track of everything, but I’m so busy managing multiple projects it’s like playing Whack-a-Mole sometimes.  It’s good work, and while it’s hard to explain what I actually do, the field is really growing and it’s a good place to be.

My dad and I are building a shed.  You could say we’re over-building it; it’s going to be fantastic.  12′ by 12′, very solid so far.  The walls are up and we’ll be doing the roof this week.  This is the first step in the larger war to come.  We have typical Orem soil, which is about 4 parts rock to 1 part dirt.  You may think I exaggerate; I’m not.  Oh, it’s also about 1 part puncture weed.  I had to get a solid tire for the wheelbarrow.  Anyway, finally some progress on that front.  See some pictures below (thanks Mom!)

Finally, I have a new calling in the church.  It’s a little different than I was expecting, but I’m up for it.  It means some changes, but it’s a good thing.  I think we’ll be blessed.  Of course, we’re always blessed.

Anyway, just wanted to give an update of things.  Enjoy the pictures below.

Valentine’s Traditions

So, what’s your valentine’s tradition?  Flowers?  Chocolate?  A nice dinner?  My mother has this funny little tradition and the oddest thing about it is that she didn’t even know it was a tradition!  I’ve noticed over the last several years that she goes to the dentist on Valentine’s day.  So today when I called her I asked how her dentist appointment was and when she actually starteted telling me I had to laugh.  I explained to her that no one had told me she had an appointment, but that everytime I talked to her on Valentine’s day she had been to the dentist that morning.  We both had a good laugh after that.

As I started writing this post Charlotte was driving cars down her leg and saying “weeee” then giggling while  Isaac was “making his train beautiful.”  He was doing this by decorating the couch with small cars and other odds and ends.  Now they’ve moved on to cooking.  Isaac says they’re making “soup with french fries in it.”  It sounds like a culinary masterpiece.
