Charlotte’s 5th Birthday

I usually get really excited for my children’s birthdays, but sadly, this move put a damper on everything.  I did my best to make her birthday special.  I took a break from trying to pack and tried to find ways to spend time with her during the day.

School was cancelled for bad weather, so Isaac was home all day with us.  He wanted to start teaching Charlotte school things since she was turning 5.  He started making worksheets for her as soon as he woke up and then helped her work on them.12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (3)When Ila went down for a nap, we made chocolate ganache for her cupcakes.  12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (6)After frosting the cupcakes, we used the leftover ganache to make a graham cracker/banana/ganache birthday treat.12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (8)We blew up 5 pink helium balloons with our helium tank.  12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th BirthdayI tried to spend time with her as much as I could during the day.  In the evening we had the dinner of her choice (pasta) and cupcakes.12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (33)She also opened her presents. 12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (15)The following Saturday we had a little party for her with friends from her primary class and her second cousin Jackson. 12.18.10 Charlotte's 5th birthday party (32) They played games, had a snack, played with dress-ups, opened presents, and had cupcakes.12.18.10 Charlotte's 5th birthday party (13)

How the rest of his day was spent.

After the birthday party we had some time before our evening activities.  I took Isaac and Charlotte to the library, then helped Isaac build a Lego set (Ila supervised in her Bumbo).  Isaac and Charlotte played Uno with grandma Bunny and uncle Bryan as I unloaded the dishwasher and prepped for dinner.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (11)My Aunt Dee and my Cousin Brent and his family joined us for dinner, presents, cake and games.  Isaac was pleased with the large stack of presents.

We tried to slow him down and remind him to be grateful, but for some reason he seemed to act like he was in a race to open every one.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (16)

Here’s a shot of some of the family that was there for his birthday:6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (21) The kids ended the day with movie night.  Charlotte and Jackson made beds on the floor in Isaac and Nicole’s room and watched Shaun the Sheep until they fell asleep.  The adults played games until almost 11:00.

Isaac’s 6th Birthday Party

Isaac requested a chocolate cake with a picture of the inside of a machine on top.  My mom and I created this the night before:6.16.10 Isaac's cake (1) After failing to make little broken wires to go in the broken cable we just put the cable back together.  It was suppose to be a water pipe, but the store I went to had black food coloring, but not silver, so it ended up looking more like cables then pipes.6.16.10 Isaac's cake (2)Isaac wanted a birthday party.  He wanted to invite his entire kindergarten class with the exception of the two “naughtiest boys.”  He thought maybe they could come, but they’d have to pay him $100.  We debated numbers and decided he could invite his 6 best friends.  I called one of his best friends to make sure that she could come on that date and time so he’d have at least one of his really good friends there.invitation

Unfortunately, none of his school friends came.  The one who said she could make it, canceled the day before because they had some family come into town.  We called another boy who said he could come, but then woke up with a cough and stayed home.  Isaac was a little disappointed, but he did have his friend Adam from Church and my cousin’s 3-year old son, Jackson came as well.

As I started writing up a schedule, I couldn’t decide where to put each activity.  I knew I wanted the Airblox first as people were arriving and an open ended activity at the end in case the other activities went quickly.  So I listed all the activities, laminated the paper, cut them up, and had the kids draw the next activity.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (3)It was a hot day.  We started out with Airblox.  Isaac was quite sweaty when they came in afterwards.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (34)The kids wrote their names with Twislers Pull ‘n Peels, and then they ate them.

6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (44)

They drew cake next, which was just as well because some of the kids were impatient for cake.  The first cake I made was not cooked completely in the middle (I know, I should have used the toothpick test—I did for the second cake).  We cut the outside ring of the undercooked cake into pieces which we decorated for each kid.  The mini-cakes had the first letter in each kid’s name and a gear.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (47)

For the next activity, they had toothpicks, marshmallows, and gumdrops that they could use to build structures with.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (52) After opening a present from his friend, we started the Kikko building races.  The kids were shown a demonstration and then given a model Kikko structure to build.  The first kid to complete the model got a small candy bar.  The models got increasingly harder.  After some races, the kids built their own designs for a little while.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (57)After playing, we built lunch.  The kids each got to build their own pizza on a pita bread with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.   Each kid left the party with a helium balloon and a gift bag.IMG_0503

Happy 2nd Birthday Nicole!

Today my little Nicole turns 2.  She has blossomed into a funny quirky little girl.  She loves to be the center of attention, stealing4.23.10 Nicole (1) glances at visitors and then beaming from ear to ear with her head cocked or galloping around the room in her own unique dance.

She has recently entered a new stage of language development.  Her vocabulary is exploding and she has started regularly using two word combinations and small phrases.  Where she would have said “shoe,” I hear her carefully articulate “one shoe” or “Charlotte’s Shoe.”  One of my recent favorites is hearing her say the whole phrase “Mom, where are you?”  I’ve started working on encouraging words instead of crying or yelling for something.  She’s doing quite well with that.  She says things like “help, please” and “orange, please” or “Oh, no ball!”  Every time we drive somewhere, she likes to say goodbye to everything “goodbye house”, “goodbye tree”, and so on.

She loves hats and shoes and she smiles and dances when I put either one on her. 4.22.10 Nicole This evening, I watched her try to fit her brown sandals onto her big sister’s foot.  She regularly emerges from her siblings bedroom and clomps down the hall in a pair of oversized shoes.  Then she’ll climb into her seat at the table and say “oh no, shoe!” as one of the shoes slips off and falls to the floor.

Six months ago, it was a rare treat to have her sit still in your lap for a hug,  now she seeks out and sustains hugs regularly. 4.16.10 Nicole and Ila (5) She has started hugging both of her sisters  spontaneously and occasionally crying for a hug.  The 2nd hour Nursery leader at church says that every week at about 10:30 she just stops playing and comes to get a hug then goes back to play happily.  She went through a short phase of saying “awww” every time she hugged someone.  Charlotte and Nicole loved to hug and say “awww” over and over again.

She goes to bed easily most days both for her nap and at night.  At times she’ll be up for an hour or two after being put to bed, but she never leaves her room or climbs off her  bed.  She usually doesn’t even cry.  She’ll be in there for hours, just singing and talking and looking at books.  I think it’s only been in the last month that she’s started insisting that she sleep on top of items.  She gathers at least three toys and often a book or two along with her water IMG_8957bottle in her arms and sleeps on top of them.  A stuffed Curious George toy is always under one of her arms.  I still don’t understand why she prefers to sleep this way, but she gets mad if I try to move something she’s laying on.  It reminds me of a silly sleeping phase Isaac went through.  It’s funny how these strange little things they do pull at your heart strings.

She still doesn’t like to be forced to sit still.  If I try to get a picture of the kids lined up or sitting next to each other, she’ll be the one who refuses to sit still long enough for me to take the picture.  Church meetings can be challenging, 4.30.10 NicoleI was counting down the days until she turned old enough for nursery!

Her favorite show is Curious George.  She’ll carry a remote over to me and say “George” periodically during the day.  She also loves to be outside.  Everyday when we get home from picking up Isaac she climbs out of the car and runs directly outside to play.  If you mention leaving she’ll to to the door to the garage and say “outside” over and over.

I also love her big brown eyes and her silly smiles.  She has started smiling and saying “cheese” when she sees my camera.  Sometimes she gives me a goofy smile where she protrudes her lower teeth and it looks like she has an under bite (I think that’s the right term).

Happy Birthday, Son

Today is Isaac’s 5th birthday and I’ve been thinking how grateful I am that he is my oldest.

He is a very kind and considerate big brother.  6.13.09 Summerfest (12) On a recent morning, I found Isaac reading (from memory) a book to Charlotte.  Later that day, he didn’t want to leave the house until he had showed Charlotte how to spell her name.  He showed her where each letter was on the keyboard and patiently waited for her to push the right key.  He regularly encourages her to do things.  I’ve even caught him bribing her with some candy (that he earned doing chores) to do things like finish her breakfast.

Happy Birthday Nicole

My little Nicole turned one on Wednesday.  So I thought almost a week late, I might write 4.22.09 Nicole a little bit about her.  Being a third must be hard. Number 1 is naturally spoiled with attention, on number two you try really hard to show them as much attention as number one, but by the time you get to number three it gets even tougher—especially when one and two are still home with you all day.  In some ways poor little Nicole gets the short end of the stick.  For example, I recently discovered that Nicole really likes to look at books with me.

Nicole is at the age where her personality is really starting to bloom.  She loves to dance and yell.  She yells when she’s happy and when she’s mad.  If she likes a doll or stuffed animal she usually growls and buries her head in it.  I even saw her do this to a cat once.  She squeals with delight when she sees an animal,5.9.09 Nicole particularly a cat or dog and giggles when a dog jumps up on her and licks her face.

She loves to climb the stairs, especially at grandma’s house.  She crawls up a few steps and then turns around to make sure you’re following her.  Once she sees your face she laughs and climbs a few more steps as fast as she can.  Unfortunately, she hasn’t mastered the proper down technique.

She has a bit of a fearless streak in her that is very different from her older siblings (who are both big chickens).  In the bath she splashes and lays on her stomach and tries to lay all the way down on her head sometimes.  When she climbs onto a chair she immediately grasps the back of the chair and starts shaking it.

Some of her favorite foods are pickles and grapes.

Happy Birthday Zachary!!

Scan10007 Today Zach is 32 years old.  Next week we will celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary.  Tonight as I reflect over the years we’ve spent together I’m grateful for the man that Zach has become.

I admire his Zest for learning. He’s always reading and studying one subject or  another.  He’s incredibly smart and has an answer for almost any question I ask.  He can talk intelligently on almost any subject (he claims to know just enough to sound intelligent, but I think he’s just being modest).  I always thought I had a fairly good vocabulary, but Zach’s vocabulary is much broader and deeper than mine.  He is really good at defining words and spelling them and he’s much better at grammar than me (I still don’t completely understand the uses of the semicolon).  I’ve heard that he’s also very good at diagramming a sentence, but I don’t know exactly what that means.Zach and Kathleen

He has a good head for music, although he laments that he is out of practice on everything.  I wish I had some of his musical ability.  When I did try out an instrument or two back in school, I didn’t have the commitment or the musical background to succeed at them and I quickly quit.

Zach has a good sense of humor.  He sometimes makes the best jokes, and it makes me smile.

Where I tend to be stingy, particularly when money is involved, Zach is generous.  He is always willing to give to others and he has a compassionate heart.  11.19.05 Ike and ZachHis philosophy is to "Cast your bread upon the water.  . . " and as you do, you find out that you have enough for yourself as well.  When he knows that a family member is having a hard time, his heart goes out to  them and he wants to be with them to comfort and help.

I admire his knowledge of the scriptures and of history.  I know whenever there’s a question relating to historical events or scriptural knowledge in Sunday School that Zach knows the answer even if no-one else does and I’ve never been aware of a time that he didn’t know.

I admire the way he accepts less than ideal situations sometimes in callings and other things, 12.14.08 Zach, Isaac, and Charlotte (3)and he has a mature attitude about them.  He respects authority even when he disagrees with it.  He sustains his leaders in spite of their flaws.

Of all the things I appreciate about my husband, one of the things I appreciate most is that he’s a good dad.  I appreciate when he takes over with the kids and reads stories to them or takes a child who is having a rough time into his arms and helps him or her calm down.  He’s a kind and thoughtful dad who loves his children and they love him.

Zach, I’m lucky to be your wife!  Have a great birthday!

Charlotte’s Birthday Party

12.16.08 Charlotte's party (9)After being invited to several birthday parties for three-year-olds this year, I decided to bite the bullet and try hosting one for Charlotte.  This is the first birthday party I’ve thrown and after all the time I spent planning it, I know why many parents decide to wait a few years!  We had three 2 1/2 year olds, two 3 year olds, a 4 year old and a one year old for a total of 7 children, but it went really well.

I had activities to fill the entire time, so it went by fast and we didn’t have to get out toys to entertain the kids.  Here is the list of activities:

1. Stories and songs (I read "Happy Birthday Moon" and "Snow Day")

2. Fishing snack (cream cheese with blue food coloring in a bowl and goldfish crackers around the side, the kids dipped celery sticks in the cream cheese then "caught fish" with the cream cheese coated celery)

3.  Watermelon caterpillar snack (I set the timer for 3 minutes to see  who could build the fastest watermelon caterpillar with toothpicks and watermelon balls, then they ate them)

4.  Picture treasure hunt (They raced around to find envelops with clues.  The clues were a few lines of rhyming text and a picture of where they’d find the next clue, at the end of the treasure hunt were birthday cupcakes)

5.  Sing Happy Birthday, Blow out candles, Eat cupcakes, Open presents

6.  Ice cream game (I checked out a game from PERC where they had to find matching ice cream pictures)

7.  Dancing to Christmas Music and playing with balloons while moms arrived and children left.

Charlotte

11.16.08 Charlotte (2)Charlotte was born at 2:16 in the afternoon on Wednesday December 14, 2004.  She  was about a month old on the day we blessed her (January 15th) and on that day I remember having a distinct feeling that I was holding a very special daughter of God and I had a sense of the strength of her spirit.

Charlotte is a treasure and a joy to me.  I love her more than I can say.  I feel a special connection to her at times that is beyond what words can describe.  There are times that her tender hugs lift my spirit and give me strength.

Turning 3: an in Depth Look

(written on his birthday, posted a few days later)

So today was finally the big day and he was so excited. When he saw the happy birthday decorations he got very excited. He pretended to read them and then started naming all the letters in happy Birthday.

Just before sacrament me eting started at church he said alou d “Isaac getting big, big, big” and he reached his arms up high. It was also father’s day so when I told him the kids were going to sing, he said “sing happy birthday to Isaac?”

Charlotte was officially old enough for Nursery as of Thursday so we also let her take the sacrament for the first time (we decided as a couple that it seemed like a good age to start). Isaac was very kind and picked out a piece of bread and then offered it to her before taking his own.

After church we had lunch and then Isaac helped me decorate his cake. We had chocolate frosting so I got some construction cone candles and I bought some small trucks to go on the cake. He was so enthralled with all the trucks on the cake that I had to take off the forklift and clean off the frosting so that he could play with it. He drove it around the living room an d used it to transport his presents across the room.

He told me that his presents were all full of trucks. At one point he told me one of the presents was a cement truck and another present was cement for the truck. He thought the big cylindrical present (Lincoln logs) was a car seat.

He had been practicing the happy birthday song and he was very excited to have it sung to him, however he was afraid of the fire on the candles so he blew them out from a distance with a series of short puffs that made us all laugh!

After cake we opened presents and he did much better this year. Although he wanted to play with each toy after opening it, he also allowed us to provoke him to open other presents.

It was also father’s day so we went to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for dinner. He rode his new bicycle. Most of the way I steered while he watched his feet and made comments about the mechanics of his bike. It was neat to see how mechanically minded he is. He didn’t eat much dinner before he decided that he missed his new toys and wanted to go home. He rode his bike home and as he rode he told me that mommys were good at keeping Isaacs safe.

Charlotte’s Birthday (Belated)

Is that proper usage of the word belated?  I know it’s the appropriate term for late birthday cards- oh well, here’s some thoughts I wrote down on her first birthday:

Today was Charlotte’s birthday. I think she had a good day. After a breakfast of banana bread, I gave her a bath. She loves baths so much that when she heard me turn on the water, she toddled as fast as she could to the bathroom and stood at the edge of the bathtub trying to climb in. After her bath we played a little while before we went to the store and then to Wendy’s. She had a lunch of French fries, mandarin oranges, and milk. She laughed and giggled and danced to the music playing over the loud speaker. Isaac got out of his seat and started entertaining her. It’s funny, all he has to do is look at her sometimes and she laughs. After Wendy’s she played outside for a little while before taking a nap. Then we went to the post office and the store. She had fun walking around the post office while we waited in line. A little girl started to play with Charlotte by following her around. Charlotte thought that it was great! After dinner Sarah, Nate, Josh, Grandma Cochran, Grandpa Cochran, Heidi and Laresa came over for cake and presents.  Charlotte loved her new toys. Some of her favorites were some bead necklaces and a toy cell phone.  As soon as she opened them she stood up and started walking around while playing with them—I think she learned this skill as a survival skill because it’s harder to take a toy away from a moving baby! Isaac gave her two pink cars for her birthday. He was so excited about them that every time I told him Charlotte’s birthday was coming he’d remind me about the pink cars! As soon as she opened them Isaac took them and put them in his room with his cars. We told him that they were Charlotte’s pink cars and he corrected us with the words “Isaac’s pink cars.” This was only the beginning. Isaac was more excited about Charlotte’s presents than she was. He tried to help and wanted to play with each toy. One of his favorites was a little dog that wagged his tail and made little noises as you pulled it around on a string. He walked all around the house saying “Isaac’s doggie” as he pulled it!
