I cut Charlotte’s hair

Perhaps I was a bit hasty.  I realized halfway through the haircut that I was in over my head.  I have cut my girl’s hair before with no problems, but as I cut, I realized that I had IMG_7468 been gradually slanting downwards.  I tried to fix it and ended up cutting it shorter than planned.  I had a terrible time trying to even out the back and the front.  I almost Just quit and took her into a salon with her hair half cut (looking like it does in the picture to the left).  I tried sitting her in front of a mirror and a movie, but she kept turning or tilting her head just as I was going to cut.  Anyway, it took way too long, end ended up shorter than I had planned, and it looked choppy. And they have also said to me that Vampire Hair Treatment is not that costly so people with baldness or frequent hair fall can avail that treatment at affordable price.

When Ila woke up from her nap, I fed the kids and took them to a grocery store that had a salon next to it, but Nicole had a bit of a meltdown as we were leaving the store because I couldn’t fit her and my groceries in the cart and I decided that taking all my girls in for a haircut was just not going to work at that moment.  So I still haven’t taken her in to fix it, but here it is.

The tradition continues

This is old news now, but I thought I ought to update my blog and decided to scroll 1.7.10 Charlotte cut her hair (1) through recent pictures for inspiration and all of Charlotte’s recent pictures make me think of this event/story.

Charlotte gave herself a haircut.  I was lucky—it wasn’t too bad and it was on the verge of being much worse when I interceded. She made her cuts right in the front forming a very choppy upside-down V and forcing me to cut some shorter-than-I-ever-would-have-chosen bangs.  I was mostly sad because we’ve been trying to grow out her bangs since birth and now we have a new set of bangs to grow out.

This is a continuing tradition because many (all?) of my siblings and I cut our hair at some point during our childhood.

Glue it back on!!

Isaac has been due for another haircut for a little while, but I’ve been reluctant to take him because I didn’t want to pay for another haircut (my mom cut all of our hair until we went to college, and to be honest during college too, so it seems a waste to pay).

Anyway, I had the idea that I could see what he’d look like if I shaved his head 3.4.09 Isaac gets a buzz (1)and this would probably be my last chance to try it before he started kindergarten.  It may not have been the best choice.  I gave him some candy and had him stand on the stool in front of our bathroom mirror.  When I shaved the hair off of the top of his head he started to panic and cry.  Charlotte must have heard him because before I knew it she was at the doorway with a look of horror on her face.  She ran down the hall where I could hear her 3.4.09 Isaac gets a buzz (2)crying too.  At that moment I felt horrible.  What could I do?  It was too late to do anything except shave the whole thing and both of my kids were traumatized.  Isaac started yelling “Glue it back on, I don’t want all my hair off.”  All I could do was finish the haircut and then convince the sobbing boy to get in the bath and wash all the little hairs off of himself.  He cried and cried and said he wouldn’t come out of the bath until his hair grew back.

After at least a half an hour of sobbing, I was able to convince him to come out of the bath and get dressed.  3.4.09 Isaac gets a buzz (4)He only stopped crying when we discussed what we could do to help his hair start to grow back.  He suggested that I buy something at the store that helps hair grow.  We finally decided to make some cookies that would help hair grow.  His initial suggestion for the cookies was to make them with chicken, sausage, and beef.  Luckily he was fine with more traditional sugar cookies.  It wasn’t until he started making the cookies that he finally calmed down and started to accept his new bald head.  Now I think he actually likes it, at dinner he commented on how he couldn’t mess it up.
