First Grade

I assume most of my readers do not want every particular about Isaac’s school experience, but in the interest of family history, I will be more complete than I would be if I were just writing this post for casual blog readers.4944928191_c482315018_b

The first day of school was August 17th.  We met his teacher the night before at a back to school night.  Her name is Mrs. Rader.  She has taught school for 37 years and this is her second time teaching first grade (she taught 2nd grade last year).  She seems like the kind motherly type which I think is a good fit for Isaac since he tends to be shy and scared.

School Bullies?

The first day was a half day so we picked Isaac up at 11:15.  He got in the van and started complaining right away that the van smelled like “stinky” (poo).  When he got home, he was convinced that the whole house stunk and he only calmed down after I let him spray air freshener all over.  I asked him lots of questions about his day and he had no complaints.  He said Anne and Emma were at his table along with some kids he didn’t know and that his seat was on the end.  He said that he enjoyed his first day.  Later he complained that a boy was holding him and trying to hurt his head at recess.  I emailed his teacher.

Within a few days he started reporting more incidents of kids picking on him.  He said a kid was biting him on his arms and legs and that another kid told all his friends to hit him and that someone tried to steal his lunch.  I became very concerned and called the school to set up a meeting with his teacher.  She called me back a few hours later and said that she had talked to the boys and that it seemed to be a misunderstanding and that she didn’t see anyone giving him a hard time, but she’d keep an eye on him.  Not knowing if he was making things up, I tried not to put any ideas into his head and I avoided questions about if other kids were mean to him that day.  He had a few days where he reported nothing unusual, but before long he started telling stories that made no sense.  He told me in a very heated voice that a boy in his class was trying to give him more math to do because the boy wanted him to stay at school for 100 years!  I asked if someone tried to get him to do their math and said no.  He said someone took his lunch bag, ate his lunch, then returned the bag.  His stories have become so outrageous that I can’t believe them, however, I am concerned about why he’s telling me these obviously untrue stories.  Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to spend some time in his class when my mom comes to visit so that I can get a first hand view of what’s going on.

Reading

I went into the school to pick up Isaac for a Dr. Appointment on Monday.  4916979463_b4188bb039_bThe teacher said she was really glad to see me because she was excited about Isaac’s reading and wanted to talk to me about it.  She had screened kids by having them read a list of words.  Isaac was one of six kids who could read all the words.  Those six took a test that gave them a reading level.  Isaac’s level fell somewhere between 1.7 and 2.7 (first grade, 7th month and second grade 7th month).  Without seeing the test, I assume that he was able to read some words at both levels, but did not read every word within that range perfectly.  Because his scores are sufficiently high, he has started reading books at school and then taking quizzes on the books he’s read so that he can earn points towards rewards at school.

This doesn’t really relate to school, but a few weeks ago I had sent him to his room to get dressed and when I went in to check on him, he was standing in his underwear reading a book.  I was very excited that he was enjoying reading enough to get distracted by it!

I’m also starting to wonder how he does in math since it sounds like the worst fate he can think of is having more math to do.  Perhaps I should spend some time working on first grade math concepts with him.

Out of the mouths of Isaac and Charlotte:

Charlotte announced one morning that she had three dreams last night.  One was good and two were bad.  The bad dream was that ants would turn her socks into “sticky socks.”  The good dreams were (1) watching something change colors that is not sticky and (2) sleeping in a downstairs room.4921775489_3d381973ff_b

One day Isaac excitedly proclaimed “My reading skills almost go the whole way!”

Charlotte has been telling me that she’s growing up.  One day she was so convinced that her growth was obvious that she told me Dad would say “Oh Charlotte, you’re growing up.” when he saw her after work.  The other day she said “Mom, you’re growing up.  You’re growing up to be a grandma!”

Charlotte announced:  “When I grow up, I will be a mommy and I will have 4 kids.  I will name the first  one Isaac and I will name one Charlotte and Charlotte will be first, but not very first.”

Isaac’s Summer Journal

I started tutoring the kids this summer at the gym.  Isaac has done really well at reading so I tried to focus more on his writing.  I asked him write a sentence everyday and while he wrote, I worked with Charlotte.  I had him to compose the sentence, then I’d write it out so that he could copy it.

“Wide Seat for Passengers”

Isaac doesn’t always take the time to add much detail to his drawings, or at least he hadn’t in the past, so when he came home from school with this drawing, I was impressed and decided it was worth hanging on the wall.  I asked him the name of the picture and he said “wide seat for passengers” thus the title of this post.

First Grade Fears

Tomorrow is the first day of first grade for Isaac.  He wasn’t very excited about going 8.16.10 Family night (6)back to school as we talked he told me that he was worried that in the first grade they would skip playtime and lunch and do math all day.  He later said that he thought they would just get one minute of playtime.

We met his teacher at the open house tonight and asked her questions about first grade.  He was very excited when he learned that in first grade he’ll get 25 minutes of playtime which is 5 more minutes than Kindergarten.  He thought the kindergarteners would be sad that they weren’t getting as much time to play.

Keeping Kids Quiet in Church

Lets face it, that hour of Sacrament meeting is challenging on Sunday morning when 5.2.10 Sunday Morning (8) you have young children, possibly when you have older children too, but I don’t know about that yet.  I spend a lot of time and energy fretting about how I can keep my children in their seats behaving well and for the most part we don’t do too bad.  Having Zach on the stand now has presented some new challenges and I have not completely figured out how to deal with our children without him.  So this particular blog post has two purposes:

1)   To keep a record of how things are now, including a record of how they used to be and how we came to do things the way we do them and

2) To solicit ideas on how to improve the way I do things.

Injury Update: The Grisly details

We’ve been on the phone detailing injuries to families for the last few days, but I know we have some close friends and family members who get their updates here. For their benefit, as proof for compensation after a traffic injury, and for our written record, I will write the details of the injuries sustained during our car accident on Friday night. Since the pictures are a little gross, you will have to click the “Read more” link at the bottom of the page to read about them and see the pictures. If you’re dealing with similar circumstances, it might be helpful to consult a car accident attorney to ensure you get the support and compensation you deserve. If you follow us in a reader, I’m sorry because you may not have the option to skip looking at the entire post. If you or anyone you know needs legal assistance, consulting a New York personal injury lawyer could be very helpful in such situations.

Paying Attention

Note: I know it’s probably a little gauche to blog so soon after an event like this.  However, I want to get my feelings sorted out and writing is a good method.  Might as well update everyone while I’m at it.

I left the house this morning in a somewhat grumpy rush.  Often I’ll forget my morning prayers during my usual routine, so I’ll pray in the car before I pull out.  I was in enough of a rush this morning that I only really prayed for two things; that I’d be safe and my children would be safe as we traveled about today.

For some reason, my attention wandered and I did not see that the light was red.  We got hit on the driver’s side, smacked a pole on the passenger side, and wound up where you see us.  As we were smashed from side to side, I was calm; I’m generally calm enough when these things happen, but I felt for some reason that things were fine.  I had reason to doubt when we saw the children.

Independence Day

I reflected back to July 4, 2004 during testimony meeting today.  That year, the 4th also fell on a Sunday, it was when Zach blessed our first Child.

Our celebrating mostly took place on July 3rd this year.

Video = While throwing Snaps, Isaac shows off his missing tooth, Jackson shows off something else.

7.3.10 Celebrating the 4th (3)We lit sparklers during the day and then again at night.  Nicole held one too, but when it started the “popcorn” phase, she dropped it in the grass and ran away.  7.3.10 Celebrating the 4th (10)The kids enjoyed chasing parachute fireworks.

Poor Nicole was scared of all the fireworks.  She hid under my chair or hugged me or Aunt Dee whenever she saw Zach approach the launch site. 7.3.10 Celebrating the 4th (7)She was even worse in the evening.  She spent the majority of time under my chair, mostly with her face buried in the grass and her feet sticking out the front of the chair.  A few times she sat in my lap and hugged me.  When I tried to turn her around, she gripped the back of my chair over my shoulder and wouldn’t let go.  I had her facing towards the fireworks once, but she covered her eyes the whole time and refused to look.

Dress-ups

Nicole has been walking into the living room wearing other people’s shoes so frequently, that I thought she might enjoy playing with the dress-ups.

She put everything she could possibly put on, notice how she is trying to pick up a 3rd glove to put on.6.30.10 Dress-ups (3)Once she was all decked out, she didn’t smile and dance around, she just started playing blocks with everything on as if nothing was out of the ordinary.6.30.10 Dress-ups (11)Charlotte put on her ballet slippers and picked up two purses and announced that she was “a mom with slippers on.”  I was proud that she dressed up as a mom instead of a princess. 6.30.10 Dress-ups (17) Then she was a mom with a tail.6.30.10 Dress-ups (15) Isaac put on a tiger hat and tail and he was done.6.30.10 Dress-ups (19) Even Ila participated, although not really by choice.6.30.10 IlaThe End

Isaac Lost His First Tooth

Isaac was excited when the dentist told him he’d start losing his teeth when he was six.  On Tuesday evening while our home teacher was over, 7.1.10 Isaac lost a tooth (1) he discovered a wiggling  tooth.  A look of shock quickly turned into a look of excitement when he announced that his tooth wiggled.  He was very excited and even called a few select individuals to announce the news.  He showed every family member, asked if he could tell the childcare staff at the gym, and offered to let his sisters try wiggling it.  He had several questions, but the only one I can remember is the question about if it would hurt when it came out.

Today it just fell out of his mouth as he was eating pretzels.  He excitedly announced that his tooth fell out and that it didn’t hurt at all.  He let everyone see it and encouraged everyone to touch his tooth and the hole in his mouth.  We talked about the new tooth that was already peaking up through his gums and he suggested that maybe when it was all the way through he should mostly eat with that one since it would be the biggest and strongest one.  Tonight he sleeps with the tooth in a Ziploc bag under his pillow.

How the rest of his day was spent.

After the birthday party we had some time before our evening activities.  I took Isaac and Charlotte to the library, then helped Isaac build a Lego set (Ila supervised in her Bumbo).  Isaac and Charlotte played Uno with grandma Bunny and uncle Bryan as I unloaded the dishwasher and prepped for dinner.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (11)My Aunt Dee and my Cousin Brent and his family joined us for dinner, presents, cake and games.  Isaac was pleased with the large stack of presents.

6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (14)

We tried to slow him down and remind him to be grateful, but for some reason he seemed to act like he was in a race to open every one.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (16)

Here’s a shot of some of the family that was there for his birthday:6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (21) The kids ended the day with movie night.  Charlotte and Jackson made beds on the floor in Isaac and Nicole’s room and watched Shaun the Sheep until they fell asleep.  The adults played games until almost 11:00.

Isaac’s 6th Birthday Party

Isaac requested a chocolate cake with a picture of the inside of a machine on top.  My mom and I created this the night before:6.16.10 Isaac's cake (1) After failing to make little broken wires to go in the broken cable we just put the cable back together.  It was suppose to be a water pipe, but the store I went to had black food coloring, but not silver, so it ended up looking more like cables then pipes.6.16.10 Isaac's cake (2)Isaac wanted a birthday party.  He wanted to invite his entire kindergarten class with the exception of the two “naughtiest boys.”  He thought maybe they could come, but they’d have to pay him $100.  We debated numbers and decided he could invite his 6 best friends.  I called one of his best friends to make sure that she could come on that date and time so he’d have at least one of his really good friends there.invitation

Unfortunately, none of his school friends came.  The one who said she could make it, canceled the day before because they had some family come into town.  We called another boy who said he could come, but then woke up with a cough and stayed home.  Isaac was a little disappointed, but he did have his friend Adam from Church and my cousin’s 3-year old son, Jackson came as well.

As I started writing up a schedule, I couldn’t decide where to put each activity.  I knew I wanted the Airblox first as people were arriving and an open ended activity at the end in case the other activities went quickly.  So I listed all the activities, laminated the paper, cut them up, and had the kids draw the next activity.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (3)It was a hot day.  We started out with Airblox.  Isaac was quite sweaty when they came in afterwards.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (34)The kids wrote their names with Twislers Pull ‘n Peels, and then they ate them.

6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (44)

They drew cake next, which was just as well because some of the kids were impatient for cake.  The first cake I made was not cooked completely in the middle (I know, I should have used the toothpick test—I did for the second cake).  We cut the outside ring of the undercooked cake into pieces which we decorated for each kid.  The mini-cakes had the first letter in each kid’s name and a gear.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (47)

For the next activity, they had toothpicks, marshmallows, and gumdrops that they could use to build structures with.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (52) After opening a present from his friend, we started the Kikko building races.  The kids were shown a demonstration and then given a model Kikko structure to build.  The first kid to complete the model got a small candy bar.  The models got increasingly harder.  After some races, the kids built their own designs for a little while.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (57)After playing, we built lunch.  The kids each got to build their own pizza on a pita bread with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.   Each kid left the party with a helium balloon and a gift bag.IMG_0503
